Rhineland-Palatinate trend of the program "Zur Sache Rheinland-Pfalz" from 5 June 2025

Mainz (ots) - Sunday poll on the state election: CDU still clearly ahead of SPD / AfD gains ground / Majority considers AfD to be right-wing extremist / Schweitzer ahead of Schnieder in direct election poll. Poll by the SWR political magazine "Zur Sache Rheinland-Pfalz!" on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 8:15 p.m. on the SWRC television program. DU ahead in the Sunday poll. If there were a state election next Sunday, the CDU would receive 30 percent of the vote (-2 points compared to December 2024) according to the current Rhineland-Palatinate trend. The SPD would continue to lag significantly behind at 23 percent (-1 point). The AfD could gain 3 points and reach 17 percent in the Rhineland-Palatinate trend. The Greens would remain unchanged from December at 11 percent. The Free Voters would also receive 4 percent, but would thus fall below the mandate threshold of 5 percent. The FDP would receive 3 percent (-1 point), thus also failing to clear the 5 percent hurdle. The Left Party would reach 5 percent. All other parties combined would receive 7 percent. Assessment of the state government's performance: Opinions divided
The work of the Rhineland-Palatinate traffic light coalition of the SPD, the Greens, and the FDP continues to be met with a mixed response: 47 percent are very satisfied or satisfied with the state government's work, while 45 percent are less or not at all satisfied. Supporters of the SPD (86 percent) and the Greens (71 percent) in particular rate the government's work positively. AfD supporters take a different view, with disapproval clearly outweighing the opposition at 84 percent.
Direct election: Alexander Schweitzer (SPD) with a large lead over Gordon Schnieder (CDU). If the Minister-President could be elected directly, 40 percent of Rhineland-Palatinate residents would choose the current incumbent, Alexander Schweitzer (SPD). CDU top candidate Gordon Schnieder would receive 17 percent. The remaining 43 percent are undecided or have not provided an answer. SPD and CDU roughly equally popular as future governing party. Unlike before the last state election, there is currently no clear preference in the state regarding the future leadership of the state. 37 percent support an SPD-led state government, and about the same number prefer a CDU-led government (39 percent). In 2021, there was a clear preference for an SPD-led cabinet. Party competencies: CDU dominates on policy issues - SPD suffers significant losses. The CDU is most likely to be trusted to solve the most important tasks in Rhineland-Palatinate (28 percent, +3 points compared to March 2021). This was different four years ago, but now the SPD is losing significant trust: Only 23 percent (-13 points) of respondents trust it to be able to tackle the state's most pressing problems. The AfD is gaining trust among voters: 13 percent (+9 points) believe that the AfD can solve the state's most important tasks. AfD: More than two-thirds consider the party right-wing extremist - party ban meets with skepticism. 69 percent of Rhineland-Palatinate residents surveyed consider the AfD to be a right-wing extremist party. They thus share the classification of the AfD as right-wing extremist by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, although it has currently been suspended. The majority of AfD supporters largely see things differently. Furthermore, 83 percent of AfD supporters say they don't care whether the party is considered right-wing extremist, as long as it addresses the "right issues." 61 percent of respondents believe the AfD poses a threat to democracy. Nevertheless, only 42 percent of respondents support a ban on the party, while 48 percent reject such a procedure. The data is based on a representative telephone and online survey conducted by the election research institute "Infratest dimap" among 1,140 eligible voters in Rhineland-Palatinate (survey period: May 27 to June 3, 2025).
